The containership M/V "Marchen Maersk", pictured here during her visit in Long Beach, CA, is owned and operated by A.P. Møller in Denmark. She is one out of a series of 12 vessels, built in Odense / Denmark. She was the first of the 12 M-class vessels (all names begin with the letter "M") and delivery took place in April of 1988.
The vessel is equipped with a 10 cylinder B&W engine with an output of appr. 48,000 horsepower, which propels the vessel to a service speed of 23 knots.
The engine room is highly automated and SIEMENS provided a complex power management system as well as the shaftgenerator and alternators. In order to use all available resources, the vessel is equipped with one HP-Turbine, one LP-Turbine and 2 Exhaust Gas-Turbines, sitting in the exhaust stream, all of which are driving a 4 MW alternator. This design allows the vessel to recover a major portion of the "waste", generated by the main engine.
Another novelty is the 3.5 MW shaftgenerator, which is located in the shafttunnel and is using static converters to match the voltage system in the ship. The system can be used as generator, or, if need be, also support the main engine as motor, thus giving the engine the "11th" cylinder it may need to meet the schedule.
